The Pilbara Regional Council is coordinating a multi-million dollar program of work to upgrade a number of roadside rest stops throughout the Pilbara region.  These structures are designed to complement  the natural landscape using a combination of hard infrastructure including shelters, toilets and landscaping; and supported by interpretative signage and other supporting materials. They also seize a unique opportunity to educate the travelling public (both local and visitors) about the landscape and the heritage of the country that they are traversing.  It is anticipated that traditional owners of these lands will be able to provide significant input into this interpretative signage, encouraging road users to respect the country and appreciate the centuries old cultures that have inhabited the region.
