| WELCOME TO THE LARGEST REGIONAL LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN THE WORLD…
|
The Pilbara region is located in North West Australia between the Kimberley and the Tropic of Capricorn, and is made up of four local government areas: Shire of Ashburton; Shire of East Pilbara; Shire of Roebourne; Town of Port Hedland.
The Pilbara region is seen as Australia’s paradox, it is the size of France but has a population of only 50,000. It abounds in natural beauty and aboriginal culture, and it is also rich in mineral and petroleum resources that help drive the state and national economies. The Pilbara generates 30% of Australia's GDP (2% of the population). The region encompasses both a tropical coastline and magnificent inland ranges where deep gorges and spectacular cliffs can be explored. Much of the Pilbara is a sea of fiery red, gold and amazing brilliant blue skies followed by breathtaking sunsets. Encompassing 507,896 square kilometres (including offshore islands). The Pilbara spans the breadth of central Western Australia.
The region is rich in minerals, hydrocarbons, fisheries, agricultural and tourism assets. Aided by its proximity to emerging and existing high demand markets, the region has been called "the engine room of the Australian economy" and is significant economic and geostrategic importance to state and national interests. |
